Update #2 from Portugal and Spain
Picking up where we left off…
On Wednesday in Spain our SaWUSA WLAX squad had their first practice, shaking off the rust from the long travel in preparation for the weekend at the Lisboa Lacrosse Tournament.
In the evening they took part in a really cool experience. They zip-lined from Spain to Portugal crossing a river on the way. Check out the video below…
Thursday the group checked out of their resort in Spain and boarded the bus and drove up to Lisbon. Upon arrival they enjoyed some time on the beach, had a training session, and then enjoyed some nightlife in Lisbon!
Friday (today), the group is out an about enjoying a guided city tour (see info below). Tomorrow, the Lacrosse Games begin. Stay tuned!
Lisbon City Tour
This full-day tour allows you to discover Lisbon, capital of Portugal, colonized by many civilizations along the centuries: Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors and finally the Portuguese after 1147. We will visit from outside the door of St. George Castle, including its surrounding quarter and Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest quarter. This city is linked with the heroic deeds of the Portuguese maritime exploration, in the 15th and 16th centuries. This was the Age of Discoveries and the Golden Era of Portugal, transforming Lisbon into the opulent centre of a vast empire. Part of the wealth from these expeditions was used to build magnificent monuments in a unique Portuguese style: the extravagant Manueline architectural style, best typified in Jerónimos Monastery, and Belem Tower. Some of these monuments can still be seen, especially in the area of Belém. But Lisbon has more than just monuments! We will visit also the traditional commerce zones of the city, with their 18th century buildings: the Downtown and the Chiado. In short, our tour includes all the best that Lisbon has to show!
Arrival in Portugal and Spain
The SaWUSA Women’s Lacrosse trip is off to a great start. The team met Coach Frank Rogers in Boston on Sunday and headed to Lisbon, Portugal via Munich, Germany.
Upon landing in Lisbon they met our tour guide, Pedro and headed south via bus to Southern Portugal/Spain. They are staying at an awesome Golf and Sports resort in The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, known for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts.
Tuesday they had a guided city tour of Seville, Spain. Seville is the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region. It’s famous for flamenco dancing, particularly in its Triana neighborhood. Major landmarks include the ornate Alcázar castle complex, built during the Moorish Almohad dynasty, and the 18th-century Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza bullring. The Gothic Seville Cathedral is the site of Christopher Columbus’s tomb and a minaret turned bell tower, the Giralda.
At night they enjoyed some beach time and a team dinner.
Tomorrow the team will have it’s first lacrosse practice and also zip-line from Spain to Portugal. It should be a cool way to transfer between countries.
Please stay tuned to our social media pages for trip updates. Stay tuned!
Touring Salzburg and Germany
It’s been a whirlwind trip so far and unfortunately it’s winding down. After the excitement of the final day of the United World Games, the teams enjoyed a BBQ at the lake. They mingled with the teams they competed with and enjoyed the beautiful outdoors in Austia
Today the group loaded up early and headed for Salzburg and Germany. They explored Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden, a 500 year old Salt Mine with a ton of history. It’s a beautiful setting and a cool experience.
The group also toured the Fortress Hohensalzburg, a castle overlooking the city of Salzburg. Again, one of the most picturesque places in Europe!
Finally, for dinner is was an authentic and historic meal at the Friesach Knights dinner and show.
All in all, a ridiculously long day of history, beauty, and adventure!
Tomorrow it’s on to Itlay! Stay tuned…
Our SaWUSA teams have arrived in Europe. Here’s a recap of the first day.
The 6 teams met in New York and Boston and boarded planes for overnight flights to Germany. Both groups connected in Frankfurt, Germany and took an early morning connection to Venice, Italy.
Upon arrival in Italy, they were met by our local ground partners. The spend the day in Venice touring the city, riding gondolas, and visiting a glass factory. In the evening it was a pizza dinner.
I’ve heard the group was VERY tired from the long flight and hot first day in Italy.
After a good nights rest they boarded the bus and make the 3 hour ride up to Austria.
Currently they are getting ready for the 3 on 3 tournament as a warm-up for the United World Games.
Stay tuned for more!
