Please join us in remembering and honoring the life of Coach Bob Hutchings. Coach ‘Hutch’ passed away this week after complications from a massive heart attack in November.
Coach Hutch had an enormous impact on life and the game of Basketball. You can read more about his Basketball life and legacy here.
While working at SAWUSA was only a small part of his career, he was a huge part of SAWUSA.
Hutch coached five tours with us over the years (2015 UWG, 2016 UWG, 2017 Euro BB Cup, 2018 Barbados, 2022 Argentina). We named him our 2016 Coach of the Year – but he could’ve won that award every year.
He might have been the first coach we hired the first summer of tours. I can remember sitting with him in the JFK airport as we departed on our first tour. He set the tone for that trip and his personality was important in establishing the culture of SAWUSA.
Hutch was a Basketball junkie. While on tour with us he was always taking notes and scouting opponents and talking Basketball with other coaches. Instead of seeking out free time, he took extra time to coach and scout as much as the days allowed. He coached passionately and gave his all to help the kids he was coaching. He was always 100% dialed in – both on and off the court.
The athletes that traveled with us benefitted so much by having him as their coach. SAWUSA is forever grateful to Coach Hutch for his time with us. We will miss him greatly. Rest in Peach Coach Hutch.
